Link building, SEO and boosting traffic

Excerpt from a great article on building online popularity and traffic:

Any good webmaster will likely agree that there is no real short cut to building sustained and long lasting online popularity. It takes time, effort and a bit of money to do it right.

Everyone, at some stage, runs into the same questions: do I keep working at building popularity, do I pay someone to do it for me, will either method pay off in the end, and so on.

How you go about building traffic and online popularity, to some extent, depends on your particular website, but there are certain aspects to great website marketing and promotion that are common to all sites.

What every good website needs to accomplish

Simply put, your website has to:

  • survive long enough for the search engines to assign it some credibility
  • be good enough that people read it regularly
  • be interesting enough for people to link to it and share it
  • be exciting enough for other sites and bloggers to hype it up
  • be well designed and SEO friendly
  • make enough money to be sustainable

What's implicit in the above list is that you are able to sustain a certain level of content creation in order to keep people coming back for more - otherwise they will probably visit once or twice before moving on indefinitely. Assuming you don't have unlimited resources, you need to find a compromise between how much time and effort you put into marketing a website and how much you dedicate to improving the site and creating content.
