Write exciting, popular & viral content in 4 easy steps
Writing blogs or articles that generate thousands of visits are easy to do, if you're prepared to put a bit of thought into what you write and how you write it.
If you've ever had the feeling that your blog is falling on deaf ears then read this article. It should get you hyped up and rearing to create super duper, SEO enhanced socially mobile content that brings in a deluge of traffic and revenue.
1. Focus on a tight niche audience
Whatever your blog or site is about, it's unlikely that you can write one piece of content that will appeal like crazy to every individual. A blog on baking might have success with a post on baking in general, but at some point the people who love muffins are going to want something that speaks directly to their interest.
Don't be scared to write for a targeted group of people. Believe me, there are still plenty of people out there who will be interested in what you say - unless it's about bats, Ace Ventura doesn't like them, and neither do I ;) Just kidding!
A targeted group of people who find something they really like, are more than likely going to rave about the article and spread it around much more vigorously than a more generic audience. This enthusiasm for the content piece is often contagious and... you guessed it, the content goes viral!
2. Be exciting and adventurous
Don't just find a topic and cover it in an academic way. Be exciting. Develop your own style of writing. Even if the subject matter is a bit bland, find a context or scenario to put it in that makes it fun and interesting. People really appreciate a well written, humorus or interesting article that teaches them something.
Unfortunately, writing like this is a skill and an art and comes with a bit of practice. You'll find that not all articles come out as funny as others. Some will work and some won't. With time, the ratio will tend more towards a majority that work.
3. Share it around like mad
Writing the article should be the fun and creative part. If you're passionate about a subject then the writing part is easy. You always have something to say, and more than likely ideas come to you as you write. If you don't feel this, try starting a new blog on something you enjoy more. You've got to feel the passion or you won't be able to last.
Once you've written something you're super proud of and know people will love, it's a lot easier to get it out in front of everyone you do and don't know. Share it on LinkedIn, Facebook, Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon and anywhere else that is appropriate.
Write to other bloggers and tell them about it. Tweet about it. Pass it on to content based sites that discuss your niche. Often, they won't cover that particular article, but might like it enough to ask you to write a guest blog for them... better than a kick in the pants, right?
4. Don't let it go
After the initial rush of traffic, things tend to die down. Don't let the article go to sleep. Keep it alive and kicking in the minds of the public by referencing it from other blog posts. I do it all the time, especially for content that has done really well and I know is popular. Like my article that explains online marketing with reference to cows.
Often you'll find that traffic that comes to see your new article is just as inclined to head off and read other articles of yours because they know they'll enjoy them. That's when you start really winning because that's when people start subscribing to your RSS feed, or following you on twitter and connecting on LinkedIn.
Excited? I hope so. Go on and write some great content of your own. Remember to reference this article as your inspiration and share it with colleagues and friends too.

Doing some heavy Views and PHP customizations for an SA startup called ZAPlayGround (not yet launched). Just worked out that Views won't pick up taxonomy terms from URL (path) aliases in organic group contextual block.
